“Things that I said I wouldn’t do…I did ‘em. Secrets below the surface of truth…I hid ‘em.”
“Man I Used to Be” by k-os
This used to be my song! I was kinda late to the “k-os party”…didn’t know/hear about him until the Joyful Rebellion album. But that was all it took. Bangin’ beats, nods to “old school hip hop”, creative compositions, thoughtful lyrics and his wicked flow = I LOVED that album…and this was one of my favorite songs. (I also thought the video was pretty cool!)
“We Are Young (Acoustic)” by Fun. featuring Janelle Monáe
I know, I know…this is one of those songs you either love or completely hate. Clearly, I fall into the former category…lol. Maybe it’s because it’s got an “80’s” feel to it…maybe it’s simply because it’s catchy. Either way, I love singing this at the top of my lungs (especially when I’m in the car…lol). Anyhoo, I LOVE this acoustic version. (Sidenote: Can Janelle BE any cuter?! That Colgate smile, red lips, trademark pompadour, and sweet voice are just perfection.)
“Crazy*Juicy (dub)” by Rahsaan Patterson
I just heard this via Lalah Hathaway’s Facebook page. LOVES IT!!

“We’ll have the life we knew we would. (My word is good.)”
“Hey There, Delilah” by Plain White T’s
This was one of those “love at first listen” songs for me. I love the simplicity of it. No fancy chords, no complex instrumentation…which (for me) helps give the song a believable sincerity that saves it from veering off into “hokey” territory. (Sidenote: The fact that New York provides the “backdrop” for the song is an added plus in my book…hehe.)
One of my besties was in town this past weekend and this came on the radio. We both immediately began singing along…harmonizing, yet completely lost in our own thoughts/memories.

This just may be my absolute favorite Jodeci song….
Jodeci “Cry For You”
You know you’re everything i do, Ooh wee
Do what you want me to
Anything you need from me baby
Get on my knees for you, ohhh, ooooh, ohh
What else is there to do
I don’t know, I don’t know, but I’ll cry
Baby I’m beggin’, baby I’m beggin’ beggin’ baby

Sorry to hear that Donna Summer lost her battle with cancer :( She gave us some great/classic songs (“MacArthur Park” is my JUNK…and “No More Tears” with Streisand? Loves it!). She was also beautiful, classy, alluring and had great stage presence. Not to mention that her music has been used to empower/embolden generations of people from all walks of life.
While this song isn’t from the “genre” she’s most associated with (Disco), it’s still one of my faves from her:
“This Time I Know It’s For Real” by Donna Summer
In honor of her birthday…
“Alright (Remix)” by Janet Jackson feat. Heavy D
I was a HUGE Janet fan as a kid. HUUUUUGE! To this day, this is probably my absolute FAVORITE video of hers. (And we all know Janet has some AWESOME/CLASSIC videos.) I owned this video. Didn’t tape it off of the tv…didn’t copy it from someone else. I actually begged my mom to purchase the actual VHS…full-length…making of…video. I watched this almost every day and memorized every move (as best I could). The costumes, sets, choreography, cameo appearances…NOBODY could touch this video back in 1990. Ahhh, memories…
Happy Birthday, Ms. Jackson!!
Just HAD to reblog this…
I mean…it’s freakin’ HAWKEYE (I’m still on an “Avengers” high)…singing one of my favorite songs…about my hometown. How could I not love this?! I was already a fan of Jeremy Renner, but this just put him on a whole ‘nother level…lol. If the Roots had “really, really” backed him up…it would’ve been EPIC…lol.
Hold the hell up…. I was NOT expecting that… But I like it… I like it a lot

“We Trying to Stay Alive” by Wyclef Jean and Refugee Allstars
